Such Great Heights

Father of Waters

Though we live in Minnesota, somehow my son and I saw the end of the Mississippi River – in Louisiana – before we made it to the headwaters in our own state. I’ve since rectified this. Life has become seriously overscheduled. Not uncommonly so but we hadn’t made it up North in many years. I would have waited for peak Fall color season but we made do with the last weekend in September. It was still lovely. We have stayed at a gorgeous solar-powered barn home in Biwabik but it’s overkill for just the two of us.

Instead, I found these lovely new bungalows in Nevis (rhymes with Beavis). They are affordable and quite comfortable. We hope to stay there again sometime. And it was a short drive to Itasca State Park. We visited the Mississippi Headwaters on a sunny Saturday. But we also made it to the top of the Alton Fire Tower and the views were spectacular!

Other trip highlights include not one but two Paul Bunyan statues, vegan food in Bemidji, a bonfire under the stars and going a bit out of our way on the way back to catch up with old friends in Duluth.
